Business Blogging

7 Apr

Blogging is important for a company especially if you are doing a business blog. Of course the question is how should we blog properly? Many people have a different take on blogging, but I find a website those talks about a business blog and I would recommend people to write it. You do not want to make a business blog for nothing. If you are going to make it MAKE IT RIGHT. Who wants to redo one? There are certain things you need to do. FIRST, your url should be something easy and short, not something really long. If you are trying to blog for a business then you should act professional and use a domain name for your blog url. SECOND, you should a blog name to tag so readers can go and check out what the blog is about. THIRD, your design of your blog is IMPORTANT! You want to make sure it stands out, add style to make it unique, make it easy to read, and have a unique header. FOURTH, you want to make sure you use navigations on a blog. Therefore, you will have different categories all set up, search boxes, and so on so on. This just makes it easier to find everything and way more organized. FIFTH, have content on your blog. For example you want an editorial plan for your blog.  SIXTH, if you want to add social channels make sure you use them and update them such as twitter and facebook. SEVENTH, make sure you list who this blog is to. You can make a page just for them to describe why you made it so you can tell readers. That way they will know what to expect and something that they can identify with.

Hopefully this will help EVERYONE! Enjoy reading this!

Where do you draw the line?

7 Apr

I must say after looking all through these articles that this article “Do journalistic standards apply to PR bloggers?” really looked interesting. I mean honestly it has been a HUGE question and debate for a while. I know in my intro to mass communications class it has been mentioned several times and several other classes we touched on the topic. I am sure everyone has their own opinion on this debate and I am not here to tell you which one is right or wrong. BUT I want you to have an open mind to both sides. You have to keep in mind that bloggers and journalists have similar functions and roles. They both are constantly telling stories and giving information to the public. Rogers stated, “Blogging cannot be replace the watchdog journalism that keeps a government accountable to its people” while later he states that “bloggers tries to keep the outside system”. Honestly to me this just comes across that a blogger is just being lazy. I mean they are doing the same thing except a journalist is doing more work it seems like. Basically we need to draw the line and make it clear. We need to draw a line between the community bloggers and outreach bloggers. Public relation bloggers can use excuses as well. Honestly, I do think we just need to draw a line!

What I have Learned in Public Relations Class

4 Apr

There were a lot of things I learned from my Public Relations class this year. Honestly, I had no idea what public relations was until taking this class. I had switched my major and was trying to figure out exactly what I wanted to go into. FIRST, I learned that public relations was a management function that evaluates the public attitudes, identifies an organization with the public interests, and plans to executes a program of action to earn the public’s trust and understanding. SECOND, six words that makes up public relations are:  deliberate, planned, performance, public interest, two-way communication, and management function. THIRD, public relations is a process which requires research, action, communication, and evaluation. FOURTH, public relations must explain the objectives and goals of their client and employees the public, and then at the exact time they must provide guidance to the people’s public interest. FIFTH, there is a debate in public relations whether public relations are professional. BUT the most important thing for an individual is to act like a professional. Professionals have to hold themselves to a loyalty higher standard and to the public’s interest. SIXTH, there is a lot in public relations department that is required such as strategic and operational management knowledge. SEVENTH, you cannot go into public relations without doing research. Many people tend to think of research as getting surveys and complex things, but it is as simple as gathering data and information. EIGHTH, you want to make sure you include a diverse culture, religious, ethnic, and economic attributes to your audience so you can relate to all different types of people. NINTH, the role of public relations is win back public credibility and trust. TENTH, travel, entertainment, and sports are huge in public relations. For example, public relations is about promoting an entertainment event, sports publicity, and travel promotion. These all attract many people.

Travel

2 Apr

When people have money they want to go places and see different things. Public relations have a goal to not only attract people to places but to keep them happy once they arrive somewhere. Not just sports and entertainment make all the money, but travel brings a lot of money in as well. Travel promotion is all around us. For example in magazines, newspapers, travel films, direct mail, videos, and even presentations on the web. There are many U.S. travel agencies that are dying to help people find the best places to go and stay in nice places while there. They want to make sure their client is satisfied and comfortable.

One important thing while traveling is to make sure good treatment is provided. You will not believe how much it has a huge effect on a client. Many things can ruin a trip such as rude hotel clerk, misplaced luggage, or poor accommodations. When these things happen it causes the clients to be upset and when they are upset they come home upset. When causing them to be upset makes them tell their friends about how bad the trip was. FRIENDS TELL FRIENDS!

Even best arrangements can be messed up sometimes. Planes arriving late or bad weather I mean it is not just an easy task. This is where personal touch really means a lot. An attentive can really make a difference in a situation like this. They could offer a free drink or meal just to soothe the guests. Training is really important for a travel agent. Just think about people that travel from another country. They are already going to feel a little awkward being in a new surrounding; therefore, you want to make sure they are comfortable. They want to feel like they are at home so they are going to depend on others.

Many tragic events can really make an impact on travel. For example when September 11th in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania happened many people had the fear of traveling and were uncertain about it. The Travel Industry Association of America estimates that $43 billion was lost in revenue and there was a disappearance of 527,000 tourism-related jobs. Even President Bush had to make two public announcements about travel to encourage people. Of course, from then on out security really raised the bar and was tight on everything.

Travel businesses have really been hired because of the internet. Consumers have found it a lot easier. Plus there are many discount specials to attract people. There are also certain websites where you can locate anything about traveling. Packaging consists of prepaid arrangements such as housing, entertainment, meals, housing, with a professional escort to handle all the details for you. This is huge for traveling!

Most of the traveling audience is seniors. They are retired and make the money and time to travel. Therefore, many of the travel promoters have included them in their details to attract them to places. They made it easier for them so they do not have to walk as much. Plus they made things that would entertain them and not just the young ones.

Here I have attached the slide show which says exactly what is said above just with a couple pictures and less words. For my presentation I will explain the slides with the information that is writen above. Check out this slide show at  public relations-travel

Tips for a Spokesperson

25 Mar

For this week’s Topic of the week we were allowed to do it on whatever we want that was related to public relations of course. So I decided to do my topic of the week on a public relation connection. I was looking all through the Ragan’s communication website until I saw something that struck my eye. Speaking in front of people has always been something I have not really enjoyed doing. Honestly, I do not think many people do! As I was searing around I found an article on tips for any spokesperson.

How To Deliver An Excellent Speech

I learned that preparing is a huge step to success. The website says, “I am convinced they can jump a couple spots on a 1-10 scale.” Just hearing that makes me feel more comfortable. They left a couple tips that people needs to know before going and speaking.

First you need to develop a message. Basically to make that easier you should jot some notes down on a piece of paper like the many points. Then, repeat, repeat, repeat! You want to be able to communicate the important message so everyone can clearly get the idea. Next, you want to be able to transition. You want to use lines like these. The most important thing to remember is… or use lines like this, we’ll what we are see here is. After that, you need to make sure you are not getting to comfortable when talking. For example your goal is not to make a friend. Once you start doing that you will start to get away from your main message. The next thing I would do is use everyday English. You want to use a word that twelve year olds would understand because you are trying to connect to the audience. After that, do not bury your lead. What I mean by that is when you are going to answer a question to your audience tell them exactly what you mean, you do not need to provide context if you have time you can go back and do that. Next, remember to be yourself.  You want the audience to know you are passionate and not boring them to sleep. The last tip they recommend is to watch your tone. Even if you do not know the answer to the question stay calm because the more your voice goes up and down the more people will read you and see you are uncomfortable.

These are a couple of helpful tips to you! Hope that this will help you out when speaking in front of someone.

Martin Waxman Interview

18 Mar

For my assignment I was suppose to watch a podcast on an interview. I choose to do my assignment on Martin Waxman. He is a president and co-founder of Palette Public Relations Inc. I watched this video and was able to retain and learn a lot of new material. This podcast really helped me have a better understanding of Public Relations and what companies are looking for. This podcast was only twenty-five minutes. I would recommend people to watch this podcast to learn more about Public Relations.

The first thing that caught my eye was when he was talking about how he worked for an agency, but then later opened up his new agency. Of course, like every business there are always things people did not like. When opening up a new agency Martin explained that there were three things that the agency was based on. First, he wanted to stress simplicity. He thinks it is really important to make things the easiest for his clients. To me, just listening to this really stood out to me because just hearing this would make me want to work for him. Second, he wants a client to have energy. Honestly, when hearing this I never really thought this would be a choice, but it makes sense. Who is going to want a boring person? The last thing he stresses is to have someone with integrity. He wants his clients to be loyal and honest.

Martin later on talks about what he looks for when it comes to technology as for hiring. He explains that you have to know traditional and social media. You have to be able to be updated with all of this. Not only that, but it is important to know people and what they blog about. When hiring he wants you to be able to inform him. You need to be able to use the information you hear about and use it in a smart way.

Another thing that he talks about his spelling errors. He told us a short story about how you can have a great person with a blog and everything, but he will NOT hire a person that has tons of misspelled words. Plus he will not hire people who uses words incorrectly. To me, this was basic knowledge because I look at that like a resume. No one is going to hire you if you cannot spell words.

Martin Waxman stresses the fact to

BLOG AND WATCH PODCATS. GET INTO THE MEDIA!

PR Interview

15 Mar

For my professional public relations interview I decided to keep it in Lakeland. I interviewed Casey Taylor who works for Crescendo- Public Relations Turned up. Casey Taylor works pretty much for himself and has a partner with him. If you would like to get a hold of him his website address for the company is casey@pr.turnedup.com . If you would like to check out his personal blog you can find it at http://www.caseytaylor.com . Another way to check out something about him is on linkenin at Casey Taylor. I found Casey from a friend Jasmine Antonelli when talking about majors together. I looked at Casey’s page and got in contact with him where I set up a phone to phone interview because he was in meetings for two weeks with him. From there he sent me his phone number through an e-mail where I was able to set up a phone call interview with him. We played phone tag for a couple hours, but then I was finally able to get a hold of him after a meeting that ran late.

A typical week for Casey is really busy. Casey spends most of his time doing the creative side which his partner does the press release side of the deal. Casey claims that having a partner is one of the biggest decisions because a business partner is close to marriage. They both double check each other’s work and try to provide help to each other. There is not one week that is quite similar to another week. Casey spends most of his time meeting with other clients because his business firm is small there are very selective to their clients and denial a lot. He claims that the two things he looks for when interviewing someone is communication skills and physical appearance. The reason why is because even if you do not know exactly what you are talking about you can cover it with you communication. Plus he wants his clients to be presentable. Casey meets with at least two people a day to discuss and have conversations with other people. The week mainly consists of a lot of THINKING, planning, and tweeting. Public Relations is about being busy!

Throughout Casey’s whole public relations career he was able to pick his own projects because he works for himself. Therefore, every project is one he wants to do. However, there is one project that really stood out to Casey which was “Culture Rock.” This event was held in Lakeland at the Lakeland Center in January last year. They wanted to engage teenagers to be abstinence and have sexual awareness. Casey was extremely proud of this project and believes it helped many individuals.

One thing that Casey stresses is that you need to stay in contact in the Public Relations Industry. He tries to do this all the time by reading graphic design USA. Plus he gets involved with photography, drawing, press conferences, and other things that are not his specialty. This way at any given moment he can be informed with a lot of things going around him.

Casey would not change anything before starting Public Relations because he was informed by so much by traveling and working by himself. Therefore, he was able to really make up his own image and thoughts of things.

WRITING is the biggest thing in Public Relations. Casey says, “You cannot be in Public Relations if you cannot write.” You will need to pick another field. Throughout his whole career he claims that his education really helped him in the marketing side and writing. It made him stronger in many aspects.

Three tips that Casey would tell people that are about to get into Public Relations is 1. BE YOURSELF. This is important because you can never set your client apart unless you set yourself apart first. 2. BE CAREFUL WHO YOU ASSOCIATE WITH. Casey told me a story about how he was offered to work with a client but rejected them. They had a bad feeling about it, which later down in the road he would not be able to do one of his projects which were outstanding if he dedicated himself to the other one. 3. When choosing a partner to choose it wisely. This is a huge decision and will affect your business.

Throughout this whole interview I was able to really get a better grip about Public Relations. This was really beneficial to me because I think it is really guiding me into the right direction. I have a way better understanding about everything with Public Relations. Before interviewing Casey I brainstormed in my head the answers I thought he was going to answer, but with him giving me examples and explaining all my answers to my questions really helped me! This was a great learning experience!
